The Padres will be without Manny Machado for at least the start of Wednesday’s game. Samad Taylor will miss quite a bit more time than that.

A day after fouling a ball off his left toe, Machado is out of the lineup for the 7:10 p.m. start on ESPN. Taylor, meantime, has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain and replaced on the roster by veteran switch-hitter Luis Rengifo.

Taylor exited Tuesday’s game after an awkward swing. He was hoping the injury was minor enough to avoid the injured list but the team made the transaction shortly after the end of clubhouse availability.

“There’s really nothing I can do to go back and change it,” said Taylor, who noted he’s dealt with obliques in the past. “I’ve done all my prep, done everything I need to do to take care of my body and there’s things that happen that are out of your control. This is one of them.

“Just get back to my work.”

Machado, on the other hand, remained in the game after fouling a ball off his toe in the third inning and collapsing in pain at the plate. He remained there for several minutes while a trainer tended to him and ultimately remained in the game. But Machado did not move well on the bases later in the game and was limping after the game in the clubhouse.

Padres manager Craig Stammen said imaging on the toe was negative but he had not spoken with Machado about his status off the bench Tuesday.

“Yeah, just a day off,” Stammen said. “I was going to give him a day off here this week at some point. Today just made a lot of sense. .. He’s definitely sore, couldn’t run nearly as well last night, but you know, kind of almost like a scheduled day off for him.”

With an open spot on the 40-man roster, Rengifo’s contract was selected from Triple-A El Paso a little more than a week after signing a minor league deal with the Padres. He had two homers and a .320/.370/.560 batting line in six games while playing second and third base with El Paso, but played 10 games in the outfield as recently as last year with the Angels and is a .246/.305/.372 hitter across parts of eight seasons in the majors.

The Brewers released Rengifo late last month after he hit .205/.280/.254 over 57 games.

“Playing with El Paso (getting) my timing back and just feel my rhythm,” Rengifo said. “It feels really good to come back here with these guys. It’s a great organization. Just move forward.”

Rengifo was not in Wednesday’s lineup as Sung-Mun Song got the start at third base in place of Machado. Song (.607 OPS) is batting ninth, behind Jase Bowen (.297 OPS), who was getting a rare start in left field and could see more action in the coming days without Taylor landing on the injured list.

Wednesday’s pitching matchup

D-backs RHP Jose Cabrera (0-1, 4.73 ERA)

The 24-year-old rookie is making the fourth start of his career. He debuted with five shutout innings on June 21 before allowing seven runs over his next two starts (8⅓ IP). Lefties have a .907 OPS off him and righties are faring well too with an .807 OPS. His four-seamer sits 93.4 mph and a high-80s cutter is the most-oft-used pitch from a six-pitch mix.

Padres RHP Michael King (5-7, 3.52 ERA)

He threw just 75 pitches in six quality innings on Friday against the Dodgers and had been in line to win before LHP Adrián Morejón gave up a grand slam after relieving King with two runners on. King threw six innings of two-run ball in a no-decision at the Diamondbacks in Arizona in late April.
