Freddy Fermin has begun his push to return to the Padres’ active roster.

The 31-year-old catcher began a rehab assignment on Wednesday, going 1-for-4 with an RBI single as the designated hitter in Triple-A El Paso’s 9-2 loss at Oklahoma City.

Fermin is on the injured list for the second time, this time with a head contusion. He missed time earlier this season on the concussion list.

Fermin is hitting .152/.252/.268 with three homers in 58 games for the Padres.

Mason McCoy (.787 OPS) went 2-for-5 while playing his second game of the season in center field.

Left-hander Jackson Wolf (5-7, 5.91 ERA) allowed four runs in five innings in the loss.

Right-hander Daison Acosta (9.82 ERA) allowed four runs in 1⅔ innings and right-hander Ty Adcock (10.24 ERA) allowed a run in 1⅓ innings.

El Paso is 41-48.

RHP Garrett Hawkins (8.10 ERA) allowed three runs in 1⅓ innings in his third appearance following a demotion from El Paso, where he had a 6.17 ERA in 23⅓ innings. The Mission four solo homers: No. 10 from DH Tirso Ornelas (.823 OPS), No. 8 from RF Braedon Karpathios (.701 OPS), No. 3 from CF Kai Roberts (.620 OPS) and No. 1 from 2B Carson Tucker (.737 OPS).

W. Michigan 14, TinCaps 1: RHP Winyer Chourio (1-2, 8.71 ERA) walked four and allowed five runs in 2⅔ innings in the loss. The 22-year-old has walked 12 against 10 strikeouts through three starts (10⅓ IP) following his promotion from the California League. The TinCaps managed three hits, including a home run from Jack Costello (.754 OPS), his 10th of the year. SS Justin DeCriscio (.779 OPS) went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

 

LOW SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE(44-39)

Storm 6, Rancho Cucamonga 4: LF Qrey Lott (.799 OPS) drove in two runs on three hits, including two doubles. Both 2B Jose Verdugo (.720 OPS) and 3B Yimy Tovar (.444 OPS) doubled and drove in a run. SS Jorge Quintana (.650 OPS) went 1-for-5 with two RBIs. RHP Carlos Medina (4.47 ERA) struck out four and allowed a run in five innings in the start.
