Re “What being an American means to me” (July 4): I was moved by the stories of courage, grit and resilience. Their dedication to honor, service, freedom and diversity stood out. Faith in the democratic process reverberates throughout this project.

These stories, together with other examples of civil protest, highlight a way forward in these times. We have just completed the primaries and are looking forward to the general election in November. Exercising our right to vote is a powerful and important way to reflect our collective values and priorities. I urge everyone to celebrate this right by engaging in dialogue with others, even if your opinions differ. This civil exchange leading to informed choices in the ballot box is what makes this country strong and vibrant. Confirm that you are registered to vote, vote early, track your ballot and encourage others to do likewise.
