OBITUARY
Joseph Raymond Scanlin, Jr. (Joe) passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on July 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at his home on Naples Island in Long Beach, California.
Born on September 20, 1931, in Fillmore, California, Joe grew up in Fillmore, where his father, Joe Sr., was the superintendent of the Texaco oil refinery and his mother, Ida May, was a homemaker active in the community. The family spent summers at Solimar Beach in Ventura, where they built several homes beginning in 1928.
Joe proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He then attended the University of California Santa Barbara on the GI Bill, where he joined the SAE fraternity and met Laurie Langworthy, who he married in 1957. After a stint at Hughes Aircraft, he enjoyed a distinguished 60-year career as a stockbroker in Los Angeles.
In 1969, he and Laurie purchased their beloved home on Naples Island in Long Beach, where they raised their two sons, Michael and Tim. The family was deeply involved in the Boy Scouts of America. Joe had the great joy of helping both of his sons (and later his grandsons) achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He was honored with the Silver Beaver Award, the highest council-level distinguished service award in Scouting.
When not working in finance, Joe could be found on the water or in the garage. A lifelong sailor, he captained his boats Mañana, Oceana, and Solimar. He was also a passionate hot rod enthusiast with a particular affinity for 1930s Ford roadsters and coupes. Joe was a longtime member of the Long Beach Yacht Club, the California Roadsters, the Early Ford V8 Club, and the American Legion.
Joe is survived by his wife of 68 years, Laurie Scanlin; his sons, Michael Scanlin and Timothy Scanlin, and their wives, Kirsten and Jenny; his grandsons, Aidan and Sean; his brother, Don Scanlin, and sister-in-law, Ann; and other extended family members who loved him dearly.
A formal memorial service will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, in Fillmore, California, before Joe is laid to rest in nearby Bardsdale Cemetery near his parents. In addition, an aloha-themed Celebration of Life will take place in Long Beach on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Friends and family are invited to share stories and memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Joe’s memory to the Balden Scanlin Scholarship Fund (a 501(c)(3) organization founded by Joe that gives educational scholarships to college-bound Fillmore High School students).
