Oakland’s soccer teams are yet again looking for a new home.

After playing the last two seasons at the Oakland Coliseum, the Roots announced Thursday that they will not play at the facility after the 2026 season.

“We have long stated that controlling our own venue is paramount to the long-term success of the Club and soccer here in Oakland,” Roots president Lindsay Barenz said in a statement. “While we have loved our time at the Coliseum over these two seasons, it is not a viable ongoing option for us as the relationship is currently structured.”

The Roots — who compete in the USL Championship, a second-level league in the U.S. soccer pyramid — said 26,000 fans were at the Coliseum for their home opener last year, but did not mention any attendance figures for 2026. The team did not specifically cite attendance issues in announcing the move, instead pointing to “limitations around event control, matchday flexibility, the fan experience, and operating costs.”

Prior to filling the Coliseum’s vacancy in the wake of the Athletics’ departure to Sacramento, the Roots played games at Cal State East Bay in Hayward in 2023 and 2024. Before that, they played at Laney College.

The club’s women’s side — the Oakland Soul of the USL W League — has played the last three seasons at Merritt College.

“The importance of a stable, permanent home—both in the near term and for decades to come—that the Club controls cannot be overstated,” the team said in a statement.

The Roots are exploring two possibilities they’ve long touted: A pop-up facility in the Coliseum parking lot in the short term, and a permanent stadium at Howard Terminal. The team also said it is considering whether it could house games at its training facility on Alameda, where Australia’s national team trained during for the World Cup.

The Coliseum is still in the midst of a years-long sale from the City of Oakland and Alameda County to a development coalition known as the Oakland Acquisition Company.

The facility is hosting the Major League Cricket playoffs next week.

The Roots have seven games remaining at the Coliseum, beginning July 25 against Sacramento Republic FC. Their final home game there will be against San Antonio FC on Oct. 10.
