A roughly $1 million project to create a new children’s playground in Wilmington launched on Thursday afternoon, July 9, with government and community leaders hailing the effort.
Los Angeles officials and the Los Angeles Parks Foundation formally broke ground on the project as part of the Wilmington Athletic Sports Complex, 325 N. Neptune Ave. The work will also include replacing bleachers at the facility’s three ball fields.

Speakers during Thursday’s event included Los Angeles Councilmember Tim McOsker, Recreation and Parks General Manager Jimmy Kim, and Los Angeles Parks Foundation President and CEO Amber Martinez.
The Sports Complex offers programs in martial arts, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, skating and skateboarding, futsal, flag football, boxing, golf, and special events and clubs, according to the city’s website.
