Dameon Denzel Clay was charged with the May 2 incident in Uptown Oakland, District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson announced Monday. Oakland police said Clay was arrested Thursday with help from the U.S. Marshals Service.
The case stems from a chaotic early morning scene in the 500 block of 18th Street, where police said a vehicle drove onto a sidewalk and struck eight pedestrians.
The crash happened after First Friday, a monthly arts and community gathering centered around Telegraph Avenue.
“This case involves an intentional act of extreme violence in which the defendant drove his car onto a sidewalk, striking multiple victims and causing serious injuries,” Jones Dickson said in a statement.
The criminal complaint alleges Clay intentionally accelerated toward a crowd, struck approximately eight people and crashed into a gate, according to prosecutors. Clay then allegedly fled on foot, leaving the vehicle behind.
Police previously said seven people, including a child, were taken to a hospital after the crash. All were listed in stable condition at the time.
Authorities have not released additional details about the victims’ conditions.
Oakland police were in the area responding to reports of fights near 18th Street and Telegraph Avenue when they received emergency calls about the vehicle striking pedestrians.
Police said community tips and evidence helped investigators develop leads in the case.
Clay is scheduled to appear Tuesday for arraignment in Alameda County Superior Court.
