Registration is open for weeklong sessions in a new “Port Art Program” offered by the Port of Long Beach and the Arts Council for Long Beach.

The summer arts program — which will guide students on how to see port operations and its future through a creative lens — is free and provides local fifth-grade students the chance to explore one of the nation’s busiest seaports through an artistic point of view.

Registration is now open for weeklong sessions this month for Those who have just completed the fifth grade or will enter the fifth-grade this fall can register for the sessions, which will take place this month.

The sessions will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. weekdays from July 13 to 17 at Silverado Park, 1545 W. 31st St.; and from July 27 to 31 at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, 5870 Atlantic Ave.

Students will participate in a special harbor boat tour to learn about the port’s operations and history, followed by classes to build artistic skills in drawing, painting, color theory and composition.

Using the port as inspiration, participants will create original drawings and paintings that will be exhibited at a public gallery in August. A panel of judges will recognize outstanding artwork with cash prizes during the exhibition’s opening reception.

“The Port Art Program gives students an opportunity to see our operations up close and imagine what the Port of the Future might look like,” Port of Long Beach CEO Noel Hacegaba said in a written statement. “By combining learning with creativity, we’re helping students gain a better understanding of the port’s role in our community.”

“Introducing students to the port at an early age helps them see it as a source of innovation, careers and community pride as we build the workforce of tomorrow,” said Long Beach harbor commission President Frank Colonna. “We’re excited to partner with the Arts Council for Long Beach to provide these young artists with a meaningful educational experience while celebrating their creativity.”
