The Padres selected Luke Cantwell in the 20th and final round of last year’s draft. He’s hardly been the team’s Mr. Irrelevant.

The 23-year-old first baseman continued a torrid start to his professional career with his third home run for high Single-A Fort Wayne in a 6-3 win on Friday at West Michigan.

Cantwell went 2-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored. He is hitting .222/.364/.593 through eight games at Fort Wayne after pairing two homers with a .328/.475/.496 batting line in 40 games to help low Single-A Lake Elsinore win a first-half California League title.

Cantwell signed for $50,000 last year out of Pittsburgh, where he hit .320/.482/.510 with six homers.

Left fielder Alex McCoy (.827 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits, including his 23rd double, and shortstop Justin DeCriscio (.788 OPS) and center fielder Ryan Wideman (.681 OPS) both had three hits.

Right-hander Abraham Parra (4-5, 5.49 ERA) allowed a run in five innings in the win.

Fort Wayne is 35-50.

LHP Miguel Cienfuegos (2-4, 7.46 ERA) allowed three runs in 2 ⅓ innings in the loss.

Missions 9, Midland 7: DH Ethan Salas (.775 OPS) went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored. 2B Wyatt Hoffman (.947 OPS) drove in two runs on two hits, including his first homer. RF Tirso Ornelas (.820 OPS) doubled in a run and walked and LF Jake Cunningham (.830 OPS) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. RHP Eric Yost (4-2, 3.34 ERA) struck out seven and allowed a run on six hits and four walks in five innings.

 

LOW SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (45-40)

Storm 4, Rancho Cucamonga 3: LHP Kruz Schoolcraft (6.59 ERA) allowed a run on five hits and two walks in 5⅓ innings. He struck out three. RF George Bilecki (.718 OPS) went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, a walk and a run scored.

 

ROOKIE DSL BROWN (6-22)

Padres 3, Orioles 2 (8): 3B Ronnier Heras (.588 OPS) went 2-for-3 with a double. RHP Raudi Pérez (4.78 ERA) allowed a run in six innings in the start.

 

ROOKIE DSL GOLD (22-6)

Padres 5, Red Sox 2: 2B Yorvin Morla (.905 OPS), 1B Dayquer Alfonzo (.931 OPS) and DH Sebastian Nadales (.807 OPS) all had two hits.
