Re “Kelly Davis — the conscience of San Diego — is gone at 53” (July 2): Kelly Davis was a true hero to me in every sense of the word. In my family, we learned that if we witnessed an injustice, it wasn’t enough to talk about it; we must take action to correct the inequity. Kelly’s life was a testament to this directive.
In 2023, I asked her if she would send me a list of the names of the poor souls who had died in custody in our county jail cells. I, along with advocates for those with severe mental illness from across our state, was preparing to hold a rally for care, not jail, at the Capitol in Sacramento in support of the CARE Act.
She came through, and I pinned name badges of the victims all over my jacket. We got great media coverage of our march. I will miss her — she is irreplaceable.
In her memory, I will continue advocating for our sickest citizens.
