Avid readers and media fans carted away bags and boxes loaded with books, CDs, DVDs and LPs during the Friends of the Poway Library’s Mega Summer Book and Media Sale on July 11.
Rancho Bernardo resident Moralee Armstrong browsed through the selection on the library’s patio looking for soft-cover fiction books.
Armstrong said her visits to the book sales, which are held in March, July and November, have been a tradition for more than 15 years.
“I have a bunch of books in my bag,” said Armstrong, who was accompanied by daughter, Melissa Heinemann, who is a Friends member. “There are some very good deals here.”

Prices for children’s and juvenile books, paperbacks and CDs were 25 cents each or five for $1.
Adult hardcover, trade paperbacks and DVDs cost 50 cents each.
San Diego resident Steve Twenge picked up a few humor books and a history book during his scavenger hunt. Twenge said he would typically browse for books at the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library, but it’s closed for renovations until this winter.
“There’s a great selection of books on many different subjects,” he said. “Sometimes you find 20, sometimes you find five. You never know what you’re going to find and that’s part of the fun of the book sale.”
Marcel Bougher came all the way from Chula Vista to shop for discounted children’s books that he could give to his wife for her elementary school giveaway project. He said she typically gives away 2,000 books each year to kids at Greg Rogers Elementary School in Chula Vista.
The giveaway project had expanded from one class to the whole school before the pandemic, he said.
“We buy books and she cleans them, then we give them away right before Christmas and right before summer so kids have books on their breaks,” Bougher said.
Bob Masters, president of the Friends of the Poway Library, said the Friends typically sell between 10,000 and 12,000 books and media in one day. All of the proceeds go toward library programs and books.
