ORION TWP., Mich. (News 10) – An Oakland County sheriff’s deputy rescued two children from a second-story window during a house fire Friday in Orion Township.
Deputies responded about 4:52 p.m. to a reported residential fire in the 2900 block of Meadowbrook Court after a 911 caller reported that two children were trapped on the second floor and unable to escape, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
The first deputy to arrive saw the two boys at an upstairs window as smoke filled the home. The deputy placed a residential trash bin beneath the window to gain enough height to reach the children.
The deputy helped both boys climb through the window and safely lowered them to the ground before conditions inside the home worsened.
“This incident could have had a far different outcome,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard. “Deputy Musse immediately recognized that every second mattered. His ability to rapidly assess the situation, improvise with the tools available and act without hesitation allowed these two young boys to escape what could have become a tragic situation. His actions exemplify the courage, professionalism and commitment our deputies demonstrate every day.”
Firefighters from the Orion Township Fire Department later entered the home, rescued the family’s dog and extinguished the fire before it could spread further.
Paramedics took the boys, a 10-year-old and his 12-year-old brother, both from Orion Township, to a hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation and later released.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
