OAKLAND — Oakland police fatally shot a person Monday afternoon in the city’s Fruitvale District, authorities said.

The shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m. near 40th Avenue and International Boulevard, according to Oakland police Chief James Beere. Beere, who had been serving as the department’s acting leader, was recently named to permanently lead the agency.

Oakland police had been alerted by the California Highway Patrol, which said it had been making a routine inspection at a homeless encampment in an area on state property near Interstate 880 when they saw a person who appeared to be armed with dangerous weapons. Authorities did not immediately specify if the person was believed to stay at the encampment.

After the suspect fled, the CHP alerted Oakland police, who confronted the man in the 4000 block of International Boulevard..

Oakland officers tried to “de-escalate the situation by giving commands,” Beere said. The person then attacked officers, who in turn used lethal and non-lethal force, according to the chief. The person was shot and died at the scene.

Two Oakland officers fired their guns, Beere said. On Tuesday, Oakland police said that the man had been armed with “bladed weapons,” but no did not give further details about the weapons.

Monday’s shooting marked at least the seventh involving Oakland police officers since February of 2023.

Less than two weeks earlier, on April 27, Oakland police fatally shot a man after department leaders say he pointed a gun at officers around the 1800 block of 89th Avenue.
