SAN FRANCISCO – One person is dead and two others are missing after a boat caught fire and capsized Tuesday afternoon in San Francisco Bay, according to authorities.
Around 3:35 p.m., the San Francisco Fire Department received a report of a boat on fire roughly 600 yards off Alcatraz Island, according to Fire Chief Dean Crispen.
A San Francisco police boat arrived at the scene and found evidence of a capsized vessel, Crispen said. A person was pulled from the water and given CPR, but they were later pronounced dead.
Crispen said 18 others were removed from the ship and taken to shore. As of 6:05 p.m., two people remained missing.
A dog also died in the incident, according to Crispen.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie thanked the San Francisco and Oakland police departments, as well as the US Coast Guard, for their assistance with the search and rescue effort.
“We (will) keep searching for those two that are missing for many hours to come,” Lurie said.
