While movies are known as being two-dimensional treats, there are places where the spirit, splash, and pizzazz of a film blithely exits the screen and moves into public spaces, all to give people an especially cinematic experience.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has embraced this nice notion, that the energy of the movies can flow through the building where the museum is located and beyond. More than embraced, in fact: A caboodle of colorful events have brought this commitment to zest-filled life since the destination’s debut nearly five years ago.
And on Aug. 6 and Sept. 3, a movie-fun moment is happening beyond the museum’s footprint: The Skate Hunnies, the female-started group delightfully dubbed “the largest roller skate community in LA,” will call upon the Wilshire & Fairfax museum for some behind-the-walls wonderment.
Arrive with your own roller skates, meet at the Wilshire & Fairfax Metro station, then take a scenic spin around the culture-cool neighborhood with other locals seeking adventure, some fresh air, and camaraderie.
The party will then wend its way back to the Academy Museum, where a social hour featuring tunes and the opportunity to shake your stuff while showing off your skate moves will shimmer and shine.
The location? It’s happening at The Walt Disney Company Piazza and is free to join.
The event is open to “all people-powered wheels,” too. And if you don’t want to participate in the roll around the Wilshire/Fairfax neighborhood?
You can show up at the museum starting at 8:30 p.m. for the hour-long festivity.
Should you want to be in the merry middle of it all, the skate celebration kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 6 and Sept. 3 at the Metro station, which is location directly south, across Wilshire Boulevard, from the Academy Museum.
