The San Jose Sharks have placed defensemen Jack Thompson and Lucas Carlsson on waivers.

Both Thompson and Carlsson were dealing with lower-body injuries for the San Jose Sharks, but are now considered healthy with this move.

Top prospect Sam Dickinson benefited from Thompson’s injury, allowing him to make the opening night roster. There is potential that Thompson will be claimed by another NHL team, given his age and potential.

At 23 years old, Thompson has flashed an above-average ability to play as a puck-moving defenseman. In 34 career games, Thompson has four goals and six assists.

If he clears waivers, Thompson will head to the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL. He would play top minutes for the Barracuda, who opened their season with a 7-6 win over the Bakersfield Condors.

Carlsson, 28, might not pose as high a risk to be claimed as Thompson. The Sharks recalled Carlsson for 13 games in 24-25, where he showcased a solid two-way style of play.

In 13 games for the San Jose Sharks, Carlsson had a goal and three assists. It was his first NHL action since he tore his ACL. Before the Sharks recalled him, he hadn’t played an NHL game since 2022.
