The City of Fresno has appointed Mark Thorpe as its next director of aviation following a nationwide search, according to a city news release.
Thorpe, who brings more than 27 years of commercial aviation experience, will oversee Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) and Fresno Chandler Executive Airport.
He began serving in the position July 9 with an annual salary of $224,000, according to the release.
City officials said Thorpe most recently founded an aviation consulting firm, Atmos Global Aviation Consulting, that advised airlines, airports, the U.S. Department of Transportation and other aviation industry partners. His previous executive leadership roles included Los Angeles International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Ontario International Airport.
“Mark’s experience leading complex airport operations, expanding air service and building strong industry partnerships distinguished him throughout this process,” said Fresno City Manager Georgeanne White.
According to the city, Thorpe will direct operations and long-term planning for FAT and Fresno Chandler Executive Airport.
The city said his experience includes recruiting new domestic and international airline service, expanding cargo operations and supporting regional economic development. During his tenure as CEO of Ontario International Airport, officials said he helped expand airline service, increase airline partnerships and oversee new cargo hub facilities for FedEx and Amazon Prime.
Mayor Jerry Dyer said Thorpe’s experience aligns with the city’s plans to expand air service and advance development of a future international terminal.
“As we continue expanding air service and advancing plans for our future international terminal, Mark has the experience, relationships and vision to build on that momentum.”
FAT has experienced continued passenger growth in recent years, and city officials have identified expanded commercial air service and international facilities as long-term priorities. According to the city, Thorpe’s appointment is intended to support continued growth in passenger service, airport operations and regional transportation.
Thorpe earned a Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Arizona State University, according to the release.
Thorpe said he is excited to lead the aviation department into a “very bright future.”
“With the new international terminal and continued strong population and economic growth in Fresno and the Central Valley, there is a tremendous opportunity for Fresno Yosemite International Airport to continue expanding connectivity throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada and Central America. I also look forward to enhancing the customer experience through new concessions and amenities that reflect our local culture and create a welcoming gateway for residents and visitors,” he said.
