SOUTHFIELD — In a unanimous vote at its June 26 meeting, the Oakland University Board of Trustees appointed Southfield resident Trina Scott as its new chair.

Scott is in her sixth year of her eight-year term on the board. Her connection to Oakland University is long-standing, as she started her college career there in 1991 and was a student-athlete. She served on the university’s alumni association before being appointed to the board by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Scott also met her husband of 20 years while they both attended Oakland University.
Scott said she is honored to serve in the role as board chair.
“My style as a leader is to be collaborative,” she said. “I am honored to serve in this role and to continue being a pillar of leadership at Oakland University.”
Scott held the position of vice chair for a year before the vote in June. She will assume the chair role in August.
In addition to her role as board chair, Scott is a member of the board’s audit committee, where she participates in oversight related to financial stewardship, risk management, accountability and the university’s long-term institutional priorities.
Scott has an extensive career in auditing and compliance. She is a certified fraud examiner, where she examines ethics, misconduct risk, investigations and organizational accountability.
Oakland University Trustee Melanie Brown provided a statement regarding Scott’s appointment.
“Trina has proven to be a leader on this board. As a fellow board member, I’ve seen her thoughtfulness regarding student, faculty, academic and athletic issues, her engagement with the university community as a whole and her passion for advancing the university’s future goals. Moreover, as an alum, she exemplifies the steadfast leadership and values embodied in a Golden Grizzly. I am confident the board will continue to benefit from her contributions as she takes on this new role.”
Scott said she and the rest of the board are focused on student success, retention and transparency. Additionally, she said community relations are important, and that the board hopes to continue its strong relationship with Oakland County.
In addition to Oakland University’s Board of Trustees, Scott serves on the boards of Inforum Michigan, International Women’s Forum, the American Cancer Society of Michigan and First Tee of Greater Detroit.
