A Nevada man who allegedly tortured and killed a kitten in San Francisco was arrested on suspicion of animal abuse, police said Thursday.
On July 2, police became aware of an investigation by San Francisco Animal Care and Control regarding a case near Octavia Boulevard and Market Street.
Investigators believe that on July 1, a man entered a bank ATM vestibule in the 1800 block of Market Street around 2 a.m. with a small, 6-week-old black kitten and “proceeded to violently torture the animal to death,” police said.
The man then fled with the dead animal.
Animal control identified the suspect as William Ohlson, 33, a resident of Reno, Nevada.
Officers located Ohlson at a hotel in the 100 block of Fell Street and on Tuesday they attempted to execute a search warrant and take him into custody. However, he allegedly fled and a police drone detected him on the roof of an adjacent apartment. The fire department was called to assist with removing Ohlson from the roof, police said.
Ohlson was eventually booked into jail on suspicion of animal abuse and neglect and evading police. As of Thursday, he was no longer in custody, according to jail logs.
