Fans hoping to see Christopher Nolan’s new film, “The Odyssey,” which is the first movie shot entirely in IMAX, have a unique option for watching it in San Diego.
The Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Giant Dome Theater at Fleet Science Center is joining the ranks of theaters across the country screening the much-anticipated film.
The much-anticipated movie, which opens nationwide July 17, is getting rave reviews from critics, including The New York Times, which hailed it as “a classic in every sense, a transporting affirmation of the art and a work of pure cinema.”
The Giant Dome Theater, which features a 76-foot wrap-around screen, no longer uses a 70mm film projector. Instead, it utilizes the newer laser projected system IMAX® Next Generation, an upgrade completed in 2023.
The dome theater is typically used for screenings of science-based films — such as “Lost Wolves of Yellowstone” and “Sea Otters: A Wild Family Adventure” — but it does usually show at least one Hollywood wide-release film each year. Previous showings have included “Dune” and “F1.”
The science center, located in Balboa Park, says the film will be in the Giant Dome Theater for just three weekends, and the first weekend is already sold out. Fleet members receive priority seating access.
The screenings run on weekends through Aug. 2 and cost $24.95 for general admission.
San Diegans can also find IMAX screenings at AMC Mission Valley, AMC Plaza Bonita, AMC Palm Promenade, Regal Parkway Plaza, Regal Edwards Mira Mesa and Regal Escondido.
