(FOX40.COM) — Everyone can use a vacation, so it may be time to unleash your next adventure. Bradshaw Animal Shelter is teaming up with Sacramento County Regional Parks this summer for their Barks and Recreation program.

“You guys can go hiking, you can have a picnic, you can take them to get a pup cup,” Bradshaw Animal Shelter Spokesperson Brittani Peterson said.

Families and community members ages 18 and older can book an appointment and get a free pass to bring a shelter dog with them for a day of bonding and exploration at any of Sacramento County’s 30 parks.

According to the shelter, for these dogs, this is so much more than a walk.

“If you aren’t ready for a dog, it’s a good way to rent or take out a dog for the day and have that experience of having a dog in a park,” Peterson said. “It’s a win-win, because not only are they taking a shelter dog out for the day and the dog gets to get out of kennels and gets to play and learn how to be a real dog, but they also get to enjoy one of our beautiful or any of our beautiful county parks here in Sacramento.”

Peterson said it’s an extra chance for fresh air, new smells, exercise and paw-sibility.

“They do get out twice a day, but not what you would normally have for your at-home cat or dog,” Peterson said. “Being able to take the dog out for the day, it gets them out, gets them exercise, mental stimulation, just a well-deserved break from that stress that comes with being in a shelter all day.”

Peterson said, like many shelters across the nation, with more animals coming in than are being adopted, Bradshaw Animal Shelter is still overcapacity. So she said this program can be tail-wagging and life-changing for some of these curious canines.

“It makes a huge impact on the dogs in our shelter and makes a huge impact on getting them adopted,” Peterson said.

The pass is only valid for your doggy field trip and your pup’s curfew is 4 p.m.

If you’re interested in making this match a little more permanent, you can talk with the shelter to get the adoption process rolling.
