Long Beach Police Department receives $100,000 for renovations | Herald Community Newspapers

City Hall — the building itself at 1 West Chester Street — houses not only the administrative arm of Long Beach government, with city council staff offices, but it also serves as headquarters to both the Long Beach Police Department and Long Beach Fire Department. Serving three separate agencies at three separate building entrances has led to natural disrepair over the years. The building has weathered the elements since its construction was completed in 1964.

Earlier this month, Assemblyman Ari Brown and New York State Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick delivered six-figure funding to help renovate the Long Beach Police Department headquarters. “We secured $100,000 for improvements to the Long Beach Police Station,” said Assemblyman Ari Brown, “helping ensure that the dedicated officers who protect our community have facilities that better support the important work they do each day.”

Updating the facility’s exterior has been part of the city’s five-year Capital Improvement Plan. At the May 19 meeting, Deputy Commissioner Steve Friedman talked about the need for structural upgrades. “I asked Commissioner DePalma to rope off the east side of this building by the ramp and the entryway into the police department,” Friedman explained. “We have shelf angles that are so deteriorated that the brick work is about to come down. I’ve got sidewalk sheds there for safety.”

The funds will be used to address improvements to the facade and entryway. “Investing in our first responders and the resources they need to protect our community leads to a safer, more vibrant community for everyone who calls it home,” Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick said.

The local representatives delivered similar funding in 2024, bringing a $100,000 state grant for improvements to City Hall and the Police Department. “When government invests wisely, communities benefit,” Brown explained. “Strengthening public safety, supporting local businesses, and maintaining the beauty of our neighborhoods are investments that pay dividends for years to come.”
