Family and friends are remembering Tondra Madruga, who was identified as the second victim in Tuesday’s deadly boat capsizing in the San Francisco Bay. “We had so much fun all the time. Look at her smile, a genuine smile 24/7,” said Leanne Mis-Dial, a longtime friend of Madruga. Authorities have located the wreckage of the “Volare,” a boat that sank near Alcatraz in the San Francisco Bay with 20 people aboard, leaving two dead and two still missing. The San Francisco Police Marine Unit used a boat-mounted sonar to locate the wreckage, which remains underwater near the site of the accident. Officials are now using a remote-operated vehicle to assess the wreckage. Madruga of Folsom, and Clifford Boisa of Sutter County have been identified as the two people confirmed dead. Mis-Dial described Madruga as someone who made a lasting impression on everyone she met. “She was awesome. She was like a sister. I have an older sister, but we connected on a different level,” she said. The two first bonded in high school, despite attending rival schools. “I was at Casa Robles. She was at Bella Vista. I believe I might have been at a football game, but we just immediately bonded,” Mis-Dial said. Their friendship endured over the years. “She has always left a lasting impact on my life. It’s just…” Mis-Dial said, her voice trailing off. This week, those memories were met with heartbreak as authorities recovered Madruga’s body from the San Francisco Bay. “I screamed so loud. It just took the wind out of me,” Mis-Dial said. “I kind of cried for several hours and got to the photo albums and, you know, really got it all out.” Now, those photos and memories hold even more meaning. “That’s my 21st birthday. Yeah, I think she had more fun than me,” Mis-Dial said, reflecting on a cherished moment. One memory, in particular, stands out to Mis-Dial: a final message from Madruga just a week before her death. “When things settle down, let’s get together. The sky’s the limit if you need anything. In the meantime, I’m here for you. And that was July the 5th,” she said. “She just left a hole in my heart, and several other people too,” Mis-Dial added. In a statement, Madruga’s family said they are heartbroken by the loss of their beloved mother, daughter, sister, and aunt.
