FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Bats are a vital part of California’s ecosystem, but a recent discovery at Fresno Chaffee Zoo is a reminder that they can also carry rabies.

The Fresno Chaffee Zoo staff found two deceased bats on zoo grounds.

Following established zoo protocols, both bats were submitted for rabies testing, and results confirmed they were positive for rabies.

California is home to 26 bat species, many of which are threatened or endangered due to habitat loss and white-nose syndrome.

Bats help control insect populations, with a single bat capable of eating thousands of insects each night.

Zoo officials said health and safety remains the top priority and that the zoo maintains comprehensive safety protocols to help ensure the continued safety of guests, staff, volunteers and animals.

The zoo said the discovery is an important reminder that rabies is endemic to the Fresno area and warned people never to approach, touch or handle bats or other wild animals. Anyone who encounters wildlife that appears sick, injured or is behaving unusually should keep a safe distance and contact local wildlife authorities.
