The Hearst Foundations announced over $3 million in grants to more than a dozen California organizations this week, supporting Bay Area hospitals, food banks and cultural institutions. 

The Hearst Foundation Inc. and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation have awarded $1.64 billion since they were established in the 1940s. The philanthropic organizations operate separately from the Hearst Corp., which owns the San Francisco Chronicle. 

In 2025, the Hearst Foundations awarded 314 grants, including $3 million in California wildfire response and $1 million to flood-impacted areas of Texas. And earlier this year, $2.3 million in grants from the Hearst Foundations benefited California institutions. 

The latest round of awards were announced Thursday by Hearst Foundations Executive Director Paul Dinovitz following a quarterly board meeting in late June. They include a $250,000 grant for food distribution programs at the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, which serves residents of both counties. 

The philanthropies gave $150,000 each toward the capital campaign for a 3D mammography machine at MarinHealth Medical Center in Greenbrae and Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center in San Francisco. The All May See Foundation and the California Pacific Medical Center, both based in San Francisco, each received $250,000. 

Several grants were dedicated to professional development: the Wildlife Conservation Network received $150,000 to support its Rising Wildlife Leaders program and the Breakthrough Collaborative received $100,000 to support the National Teaching Fellows program. 

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music received $150,000 to support housing scholarships. Other education-related grants included $100,000 to literacy programs at Raising a Reader in Milpitas and $150,000 to scholarships for nursing students at Saint Mary’s College of California in Moraga. 

CASA of Monterey County received $100,000.
