A group of firefighters from Oakland, California, took their dedication to their job to entirely new heights when they noticed an animal resident struggling to breathe after a vehicle fire.
Oakland Fire Department posted a video of the pigeon getting help from firefighters on July 15, and viewers can’t get enough. From the bird’s brave leap of faith to the first responders’ quick response, the positivity in this video is enough to restore anyone’s faith in humanity.
The poor pigeon was suffering from smoke inhalation from the nearby vehicle fire, and it made the brave choice to approach E29’s crew for help. Firefighters administered oxygen as soon as they saw the bird struggling to breathe, and after a few minutes, it felt recovered enough to fly away on its own.
“Sources say the insurance company is finding a way to bill the bird as we speak,” commenter @hellaa.bella joked. I wouldn’t want to be on the tail end of that bill! Luckily, the bird flew away before anyone could get his identity or insurance information, so it looks like he got away with it.

Another commenter, @diontheastonishing, included, “This is not the first pigeon Oakland fire dept has saved. These guys are the best.” You can say that again!
San Francisco first responders recently rescued a dog who became stranded on a beach cliff, so it’s safe to say that Bay Area firefighters are experts in animal rescue. As a pet parent, this is exactly what I love to see!
Pigeons & Humans
As several viewers mentioned, people are the only reason that pigeons are wild birds to begin with. If it weren’t for humans’ choices, this poor bird would never have been in this position!

“Reminder that we domesticated pigeons and then abandoned them when they were no longer useful to us,” said @joleneee111. “This is literally the least we can do.”
It’s a massive relief to know that this pigeon flew away unscathed, and that there are plenty of people in the world who will drop everything to help an animal in need.
