A 27-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday morning next to Lake Merritt in Oakland, authorities say. Police said he was an Oakland resident, though his name has not been released.
Officers responding to several gunshot detection alert system notifications found the man about 2:50 a.m. in the 1400 block of Lakeside Drive on a grassy slope near Lake Merritt.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators are trying to determine why the man was in the area and what the motive was for his killing.
No arrests have been made and no suspect information has been released. The killing is the 29th homicide investigated by Oakland Police this year. Last year at this time, police had investigated 39 homicides.
