Map: Biscar Fire quickly becomes California’s biggest this season

A wildfire in Lassen County has become California’s biggest of the year, and evacuations were ordered for more than 300 square miles.

The Biscar Fire was reported around noon Saturday 25 miles northeast of Susanville, said the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The first evacuation orders were issued within six hours.

On Sunday evening, the fire was mapped at 29,752 acres (46 square miles), and containment was estimated at 5%, CalFire said. The map above shows the evacuation area in red and the approximate perimeter as a black line.

Highway 395 is closed in the fire area, the California Department of Transportation said on Monday.

Previously, the state’s biggest fire of 2026 was the Santa Rosa Island Fire, in May, which burned 18,379 acres.
