BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Alex Anthony Rubio did everything wrong on Jan. 3, 2014.

First, he got behind the wheel after drinking. Then he sped at nearly 120 mph on city streets, smashing into a car driven by 22-year-old Princess Almonidovar, who died on impact.

Rubio, uninjured, left his wrecked vehicle and jumped a wall then hid in a backyard. When spotted by Bakersfield police officers, he ran, climbing three fences before officers caught and, following a struggle, placed him in handcuffs.

He showed more concern for his vehicle than he did Almonidovar.

“How bad did that chick f— up my car?” he asked officers according to court filings.

Rubio was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison — a term he’ll continue to serve following a parole board decision last week.

On July 15, the state Board of Parole Hearings denied Rubio parole for five years.

“A five-year denial is significant and fair given the severity of the crime and the loss of a human life,” District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer said in a release. “Rubio’s preventable actions had an irreversible outcome, and meaningful accountability requires significant consequences.”

Prosecutors had asked that he be denied parole, and the board found he continues “to pose a current unreasonable risk of danger to society.”

Rubio was 24 when the crash occurred. He’s 37 now, and will be in his 40s before he gets another shot at parole.

The crash occurred around 3 a.m. when Rubio’s Chrysler 300 sedan ran a red light while speeding south on New Stine Road and slammed into a Toyota driven by Almonidovar traveling east on Ming Avenue.

The impact ripped off half the Toyota’s roof and sent the Chrysler airborne. The Chrysler rolled over and hit a traffic signal pole and utility box before sliding to a rest on its roof 600 feet away from the other vehicle.
