One of the Bay Area’s most popular Mexican American bakeries is taking over the former Shuggie’s restaurant in the Mission. Florecita Panaderia will vacate its shoebox Bryant Street location Aug. 26 and will reopen Sept. 12 at the former Shuggie’s space on 23rd and Bryant.
Owners Ximena and Jared Williams had been looking for a bigger space since January and say they’re thrilled to bring new life to the space Shuggie’s occupied until earlier this month. “We loved the charm of our alleyway bakery,” Ximena says, “but we always knew it was a steppingstone to our next chapter.”

The move will allow the couple to fulfill their dream of serving coffee alongside their seasonal, California-inspired conchas. Their current space, inside the work-live complex the Madelon, is permitted as a cottage business, making a cafe setup impossible.
To accomplish this, the couple will turn what was Shuggie’s orange front room into a production space, home to their baking operation and large pastry case. Having access to a full kitchen will allow Florecita to expand beyond its lineup of conchas, which includes seasonal versions made with strawberries and stone fruit from the 22nd Street farmers market.
The second dining room will house the coffee program, for which the couple will partner with a yet-to-be-decided Bay Area shop. Ximena says pairings will be paramount; when a guava concha comes on the menu, so too will a guava latte. “Conchas will always be the center for us,” Ximena says, “but coffee is a really great best friend.”
Rather than expanding into savory food themselves, the Williamses hope to invite local chefs for occasional pop-ups. Breakfast sandwiches on conchas are outside of Florecita’s wheelhouse, Ximena says with a laugh.
The space will look decidedly different. Shuggie’s trash-glam maximalism will make way for a softer, homey vibe, inspired by Ximena’s grandmother’s home in Mexico City. There will be no Wi-Fi, so all eyes will be on the conchas and coffee.
Ximena remembers fondly her first time dining at the one-of-a-kind Shuggie’s with Jared, on their second anniversary. “Shuggie’s has had such a special place in the Mission for so long,” Ximena says. “It’s an iconic space.”
