ALAMEDA — A former Alameda Unified School District employee has been arrested and charged with burglary for allegedly stealing at least one safe from a district office, court records show.
Paul Borg III, 24, of Oakland, was charged with one count of felony burglary in the June 7 break-in, and also with two felony counts of possessing a concealed pistol when police arrested him on June 23, according to court records. Authorities say Borg worked for two years as a custodian for AUSD, but lost his job in 2024 amid a conflict with another employee.
Borg was identified as a suspect in the break-in after a privately-owned license plate reader system identified his Mercedes as being in the area around 3 a.m. when the burglary took place. Borg and another unidentified suspect were seen on video breaking into a district building in Challenger Drive in Alameda and making off with two safes, according to police.
Borg was identified as a suspect in a February break-in of the same building, but he hasn’t been charged, court records show. When police searched his home in June, they reportedly found a safe that had been damaged with a sledgehammer and had a melted hole, possibly from a blowtorch.
Arrested in Emeryville, after driving the same Mercedes across the Bay Bridge, Borg told police he “just found a safe on the side of the road.” Police say they found a gun in the car that had last been registered in the 1960s, to a Solano County resident.
Borg was released after a June court appearance by Judge Thomas Reardon, over the objections of prosecutors, according to court records. He has pleaded not guilty and is due in court for a preliminary hearing in August, records show.
