A 73-year-old woman from California’s Central Coast was stabbed to death near the exit of a mall food court in what law enforcement officials described as a senseless and tragic act of violence.
The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on July 20 at Capitola Mall, located at 1855 41st Ave. in Capitola, a Santa Cruz County city on the northern shore of Monterey Bay.
Responding officers found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds and immediately began life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, according to a news release from the Capitola Police Department.

The mall was temporarily closed while the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Unit processed the scene.
Police said they are working closely with the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office on the ongoing investigation.
“Because this incident occurred in a public setting, detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the attack or has photographs, video recordings or other information that may assist the investigation to contact the Capitola Police Department at 831-475-4242,” officials said.
