A Long Beach police officer has been appointed to the board of directors for the National Alliance on Mental Illness Mississippi.

Officer Shea Berens will serve on the statewide board, which supports education, advocacy and resources for people living with mental illness, along with their families and caregivers.

NAMI Mississippi also works with Crisis Intervention Team programs to strengthen cooperation among law enforcement agencies, mental health professionals and local communities.

The Long Beach Police Department said its local partnership with Pine Belt Mental Healthcare Resources helps connect people in need with mental health services and support.

The department praised Berens for her commitment to serving the community and said the appointment recognizes her leadership beyond her law enforcement duties.
