Class is back in session Wednesday for tens of thousands of students across the South Bay.
The Chula Vista Elementary School District, National School District, South Bay Union School District and Sweetwater Union High School District operate on a year-round schedule, so the summer break is just six weeks long.
Sixth-graders and best friends Amanda Flores and Stella Bacud said they don’t mind the shortened summer.
“I feel like that our summer break is fair,” Bacud said. “We have a lot of breaks.”
Both students said they were excited to see their teachers and friends again and to take advantage of everything the school has to offer.
“Like the privileges you have as a sixth-grader—activities, Student Council, Peace Patrol, Safety Patrol, all those activities,” said Flores.
In addition to all the activities, Allen Elementary and many other schools across the district are replacing traditional desks with so-called “flexible seating” in some classrooms.
“Flexible seating” is available in some classrooms across the district.
“What we want to have our students experience is ownership, having that place in that room where every inch of their classroom is a place of learning,” said Principal Lizeth Lopez. “So it builds community, not just learning.”
In the spirit of building community, the district is holding a Community Expo this Saturday. The event will feature free food, family-friendly activities and resources. It’s happening from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the CVESD office on J Street in Chula Vista.
