The California Department of Justice is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting involving the Simi Valley Police Department that left one person dead Tuesday afternoon, Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Wednesday.
According to the attorney general’s office, the shooting occurred at about 1:45 p.m. on July 21 in Simi Valley and resulted in the death of one individual. Officials did not immediately identify the person who was killed or release details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Under Assembly Bill 1506, the California Department of Justice is required to independently investigate incidents in which an unarmed civilian is killed by a peace officer. The department’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team has launched an investigation into the incident.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the DOJ’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for an independent review, according to the attorney general’s office.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials noted that the information released so far is preliminary and may change as the case develops.
While the attorney general’s office did not identify the shooting, the announcement came a day after a fatal officer-involved shooting in Simi Valley in which police said a 37-year-old man died after a pursuit ended in a crash involving a parked police motorcycle and a home. Officials have not confirmed the two incidents are the same.
