FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — An 83-year-old Fresno man has been identified as the victim of a deadly apartment fire near First Street and Clinton Avenue in Fresno.

The Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as James Lowery of Fresno on Wednesday.

On July 15, firefighters responded just before 6 p.m. to a fire at a single story fourplex. Crews entered the apartment where the fire first started, and found Lowery dead in a bedroom. Officials said he was confined to a bed at the time of the fire.

The fire spread through a shared attic space, damaging all four units and left 15 people without a home.

Lowery’s sister was taken to a hospital for evaluation and does not have serious injuries.

According to investigators, the fire began in the bedroom where Lowery was found, but the cause remains under investigation.
