Earlier this month, Broadway Sacramento announced the cast for its upcoming production of “Hairspray,” featuring a major name in the drag world.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” winner Ginger Minj will play one of the musical’s leading roles: Edna Turnblad, the mother of protagonist Tracy Turnblad.
The leading role is rooted in drag culture — iconic drag queen Divine first played Edna Turnblad in the original 1988 “Hairspray” film. However, the role was most famously played by actor John Travolta in the 2007 version of the film.
Minj, whose real name is Joshua Allen Eads, will make her Broadway at Music Circus debut Aug. 21, and the musical runs through Aug. 30 at the UC Davis Health Pavilion, 1419 H St. in Sacramento.
Tickets for the 12-show production are available on the Broadway Sacramento website, starting at $50 plus fees.
