A 72-year-old driver was killed after veering off a Long Beach bridge and submerging his car into the water below.
On July 22, Long Beach police were called to a crash near Studebaker Road and Loynes Drive around 4:20 a.m.
Investigators said the male driver, who was in a Toyota Tundra pickup truck, was traveling north on Studebaker Road when, for unknown reasons, he crashed into a guard railing on the bridge and the vehicle fell into the Los Cerritos Channel underneath.
Long Beach Fire crews responded to the scene and rescued the driver and a female passenger from the submerged truck.

The 72-year-old man was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. He was only identified as a resident of Grover Beach in San Luis Obispo County.
The adult female passenger was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Although the cause of the crash is under investigation, police said, “Speed and distracted driving may have been a contributing factor.”
