SAN JOSE, Calif. — Forward Antoine Griezmann scored in his Major League Soccer debut, David Brekalo and Iván Angulo each scored his first goal of the season, and Orlando City shut out the San Jose Earthquakes (10-2-3) 4-0 on Wednesday night in the first game for both teams since before the World Cup break.

Griezmann was acquired in March from Atlético Madrid — where he is the club’s all-time leading scorer with 211 goals and 97 assists in 488 matches — with the understanding that the 35-year-old forward would report to Orlando after the conclusion of the La Liga season.

Braian Ojeda added a goal for Orlando (5-9-2). Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau made seven saves.

Brekalo was left unmarked and flicked in a header off a perfectly placed free kick played into the center of the area by Eduard Atuesta to open the scoring in the seventh minute.

Atuesta pushed a pass to Angulo, who faced no pressure as he approached the penalty box and ripped a low shot that skipped past Earthquakes goalkeeper Angus Gunn to make it 2-0 in the 29th minute. It was Angulo’s first goal since Oct. 5, 2024 against Cincinnati.

It marked the first clean sheet of the season for the Lions and was a good start to the post-World Cup break for Orlando City, which headed into the break with a 4-2-9 record.

“Very happy on the victory. The way the guys performed today, I think it was amazing,” Orlando City coach Martin Perelman said. “It was a really good start to the second part of the season, so we’re so happy. Again, for the performance, for the effectivity, for the clean sheet, for many things, and we hope we can keep and maintain this level and these results.”

But the Lions have a tough challenge when they play their first home regular-season game since the break at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Inter&Co Stadium. They will take on Nashville SC, the top team in the MLS Eastern Conference with a 12-3-1 record and 39 points.

That game will be Lions’ fans first live look at Griezmann in an MLS game. In fact, the roster will have multiple new players after making several changes during the World Cup break. The club brought back striker Daryl Dike via free agency on July 17 and traded forward Duncan McGuire to the Houston Dynamo FC on July 10 in exchange for a package worth up to $2.4 million in allocation money. Dike did not play Wednesday night.

Orlando City also signed Orlando City B defender Bernardo Rhein to a short-term agreement, the club announced Wednesday. It also added defender Clovis Archange and goalkeeper Tristan Himes, signing them to first team contracts as homegrown players.
