Rowena Brown, Oakland’s at-large city councilmember, was assaulted and robbed “by an acquaintance she had been supporting through a difficult time,” her office said Thursday.

The assault and robbery happened Saturday evening in Oakland, according to Brown’s office. She sought medical treatment and is recovering.

“She remains focused on her recovery and on continuing to serve the Oakland community,” Brown’s office said in a statement.

Brown’s office said the suspect was taken into custody.

“We are grateful to the Oakland Police Department for its swift response, for taking the suspect into custody, and for its continued investigation of the incident,” Brown’s office said in a statement. “We ask that Councilmember Brown’s privacy be respected as she recovers.”
