A teenager suspected of gunning down a man near the Santa Monica Pier earlier this week surrendered to authorities, police announced Thursday.
The initial investigation began when officers responded to Pacific Coast Highway next to Parking Lot 1 at around 12:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.
The man found with multiple gunshot wounds was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police believe a physical altercation between two groups in the parking lot led to gunfire.
Because of the suspect’s age, police did not provide details about the 16-year-old other than he’s from Las Vegas.
“Violence of any kind has no place in our community,” said Santa Monica Police Chief Darrick Jacob. “While nothing can replace the life that was lost, the swift and focused work of our detectives resulted in the suspect being safely taken into custody. This is an important step, but our work is not finished. Our beachfront is one of Santa Monica’s most heavily visited public spaces, and we remain committed to keeping it safe for residents, visitors, businesses, and everyone who comes to enjoy our community.”
Detectives continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, police said.
