New Leaf Community Markets plans to close its only San Jose grocery store, a move that will affect 61 employees, according to a state filing.
The natural and organic grocer filed a notification with California officials Tuesday for its store at 5667 Silver Creek Valley Road.
The notice describes the closure as permanent and lists Sept. 20 as the effective date. It does not explain why the store is closing.
New Leaf did not respond to a request for more details.
The Silver Creek location is New Leaf’s only store in Santa Clara County. The company also operates markets in Aptos, Capitola, Half Moon Bay and at two locations in Santa Cruz.
New Leaf traces its beginnings to a small Santa Cruz cooperative that opened in 1985 as Westside Community Market. The company specializes in natural and organic groceries, locally produced food and prepared meals.
New Leaf is part of Good Food Holdings, which also owns Bristol Farms, Lazy Acres Natural Market, Metropolitan Market and New Seasons Market.
