Traffic came to a standstill in the downtown Los Angeles area Friday after a man climbed on top of an arch on the Sixth Street Bridge and refused to come down.
The bridge connecting downtown Los Angeles and Boyle Heights was closed as police and firefighters responded to the scene.
The shirtless man wearing a bandanna on his head climbed onto one of the bridge’s arches at about 8:30 a.m. and threatened to jump, authorities said.
The viaduct, which replaced the original bridge built in 1932, has 10 pairs of arches that are 10 feet wide with spans of about 300 feet. The arches range in height from 30 feet to 60 feet.
