A new chicken restaurant with an ’80s-inspired vibe is set to open in central Bakersfield on Saturday, offering family-style meals, loaded fries and a grand-opening giveaway that could land customers a free meal.
Turning Bird Clucking Family Meals is a new spot in central Bakersfield that is opening to the public Saturday. Co-owner Ashley Simanek said the menu includes items such as “cluck fries,” which she described as fries “fried in beef tallow” and topped with black beans, cotija cheese, “cluck around and find out sauce,” and “flock dust.”

Simanek also highlighted family-style chicken meals, including the mini bird, which she said is a whole chicken served with sides of the customer’s choosing, and a half bird meal that comes with two sides. Side options mentioned include mac and cheese and street corn.
For the grand opening, the restaurant plans to randomly place a “golden ticket” on a plate. Simanek said customers who receive one can “go ahead and bring it back, and you’ll get a free family bird meal.”

Simanek said there will also be a promotion for the first 50 customers who arrive with a vintage vehicle. “We are also going to be handing out our founders’ cluck passes, and that is going to be for our first 50 customers that come in with a vintage vehicle, preferably 80s and older,” she said.
Simanek said the pass is valid for a year and includes perks such as “free drink for the whole year, and some discounts on food.”
Inside, the restaurant leans into a retro theme. “We’re going back to like the 80s,” Simanek said. “So we like it to keep it groovy and and just spice it up a little bit.”

Among the sides, Ashley described the street corn as a blend of fire-roasted corn with bell peppers and jalapenos, topped with the restaurant’s signature sauce and cotija cheese, calling it “kind of like a mix on an esquite.”

Turning Bird, located on 2400 Wible Rd Ste 7 Bakersfield CA 93304, will officially be opening their doors Saturday at 11am- 8pm. They will also offer face painting for children and a few other promotions for families.
