SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Shortly after announcing possible impacts from reduced flights for 40 airports across the country, the Sacramento International Airport said Thursday it is experiencing separate issues involving an outage and weather.
Fog affected much of the Northern California region earlier in the morning, which impacts visibility for aircraft. Around 8 a.m., KCRA 3 asked SMF if aircraft are having issues landing at the airport. Shortly before 9 a.m., a spokesperson confirmed SMF is dealing with an outage with technology that supports aircraft landings during low visibility.
SMF told KCRA 3 that because of that outage, some flights are being diverted, and it is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to minimize disruptions. Travelers should check with their airline for current flight status before arriving at the airport.
It was not immediately clear which airlines and flights were impacted.
These disruptions are not related to the FAA’s announcement that it is reducing flights by 10% for 40 of the nation’s busiest airports. Find that full list here.
While SMF is not on that list, the airport did warn travelers that there may be ripple effects from those airports experiencing flight limitations.
The FAA’s imposed limitations come as the government remains shut down, now marking the longest shutdown in the country’s history. Air traffic controllers have not been paid since federal lawmakers reached an impasse on Oct. 1.
