Families camp overnight for back-to-school resources in West Sacramento
Hundreds of families attended a back-to-school resource fair at River City High School, with some parents camping overnight to secure supplies and services.
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Families in West Sacramento gathered at River City High School today for a back-to-school resource fair offering essential supplies and services to help students prepare for the new school year.
The event featured a backpack giveaway, prizes, free haircuts and free dental services for students. Organizers said the fair required months of planning and relied on numerous donations.
Educators highlighted the importance of providing resources to students, noting that access to these essentials increases the likelihood of a successful school year.
The superintendent of Washington Unified School District shared the story of a parent who camped out overnight to ensure access to the event.
“I think for me, one of the stories that tells the need is the first person in line for the event was here at 9 p.m. last night, and when we asked, ‘you slept here?’ The person told us, ‘I need the resources that you all are providing. And so this is the sacrifice that I’m going to make.’ So that’s the kind of unheard stories we can talk about,” Dr. Cheryl Hildreth, superintendent of WUSD, said.
This marks the 11th year the resource fair has been held, and organizers said they look forward to bringing it back to the community next year.
