Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Amoscato.
Hi Allie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, Allie grew up in the Catholic school universe. After graduating from a small liberal arts college in New York, she returned to California and started teaching at a new local art studio. In addition to regular babysitting, she was also teaching at a preschool.
By her 30th birthday she was ready for something new and had enrolled in cosmetology school. Allie had already used all of the colors of the rainbow on her own head, and had been trusted to cut a few people’s hair, so she decided it was time to become licensed.
9 years later, she is still fortunate enough to still be coloring the world through hair.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While no change is ever easy, covid made hair extra complicated for over a year. I went back to teaching while I couldn’t work in a salon, then made my way back to the hair.
The biggest difficulty in salon world is finding a space where both myself and my clients can feel comfortable to show up as they are.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love color at my core. I love how gratifying the process can be, watching someone’s hair change before your eyes, and their confidence when they bounce out the door after.
My most favorite moments are when someone looks in the mirror after their color is finished and says “There I am!”
I’ve also developed a passion for cutting. I love being able to create styles that support someone’s natural texture and personal style- the weirder and more out of I love being able to create styles that support someone’s natural texture and individual style- the weirder and more out of the box the better.
Something is really magical about helping people come into a specific version of themselves, and my happy place is supporting them to find whatever the next authentic version is.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been a little too loud and a little too sparkly.. Growing up I did dance and theater, which gave me a place to channel that kind of energy. The pipeline of “kid who talks in class” to hairdresser is very real. But I also have a really quiet, introspective side. I spend a lot of time in my head and with my kitties when I have the time to tune out.
