Sacramento deputies warn community of jewelry distraction thefts
(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community of an increase in jewelry distraction thefts happening in the area.
SCSO said the suspects target both men and women of Asian descent, between the ages of 50 and 70 years old.
The suspects are seen approaching the victims in a friendly, non-threatening manner and using conversation, such as asking for directions, as a distraction. They are also giving fake gifts, hugs, “blessings” or requesting assistance as they secretly remove valuable jewelry and replace it with fake jewelry.

Deputies said that there have been reported incidents of suspects following victims home before committing the theft, or even using force.

Law enforcement is sharing these tips so no one else falls victim:
keep expensive jewelry covered or leave it at home whenever possible
Never allow strangers to place jewelry, scarves or gifts around your neck
Be cautious of unsolicited hugs, blessings or unnecessary physical contact
Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in parking lots and shopping centers
“If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and leave the area,” officials with SCSO said.
Those who become victims or witness suspicious activity are asked to report it immediately.
Victims are asked to preserve evidence left at the scene and make note of vehicle and suspect descriptions.
“Help us spread the word by sharing this post with your family, friends, and neighbors. Awareness is one of the best ways to prevent these crimes,” SCSO said.
