An adult daycare center will soon be constructed on a vacant lot within the Shaw Avenue Plaza commercial center, according to a proposal approved by the Clovis Planning Commission.

Located at 1750 Shaw Avenue, the 7,278-square-foot daycare center will cover a 0.77-acre vacant parcel, neighboring a senior living community and a variety of businesses, including Walgreens, Armstrong Pet Hospital, and The Human Bean coffee stand.

The center owner, Social Vocational Services, is a nonprofit organization offering skills and vocational training for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Founded in 1977, the organization now has over 80 locations across the state, including four centers in Fresno and one in Clovis.

Social Vocational Services is licensed to receive a maximum of 90 participants, said Eric Garcia, the city’s assistant planner. But the center typically sees 35-40 participants at one time.

The program also provides transportation to participants. The center estimates to have 15 company vans parking overnight in the plaza, Garcia said. Some parking spaces will be added to the commercial plaza’s existing parking lot to ensure ample parking spots, city officials said.

The daycare center proposed hours of operation from Mon-Fri, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the document approved by the planning commission. No evening activities are expected to take place.

“At 4 o’clock, it’s cutoff, and they drive everybody home,” said Chris Ward, owner of Centerline Design, LLC, the representative for Social Vocational Services. “Their facilities are like that all over California. Everybody in that age group wants to get home typically by 5 o’clock.”
