The driver of a stolen Mercedes weaved in and out of Los Angeles traffic on Tuesday in a desperate attempt to evade law enforcement.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the pursuit began at about 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Sherman Way and Woodman Avenue in North Hollywood. Police said the driver stole a white Mercedes and was armed, but tossed the firearm out the window of the vehicle during the chase.

While trying to flee from officers, the driver hopped on and off freeways during peak weekday traffic hours, traveling through the valley and parts of West Los Angeles before reaching downtown LA.

While on surface streets, the driver blew through red lights and traveled on the wrong side of the road to try to get officers off their trail. While traveling on the 110 Freeway approaching downtown, the driver weaved through traffic, coming dangerously close to other drivers.
